Everybody is responsible for the drainage of their lands, not just Bord na Mona.
That's according to the Head Planner of Longford County Council Donall Mac an Bheatha who says he has no doubt that the rewetting of bogs will take place in a very measured and responsible fashion and that neighbouring landowners will be kept informed by the peat harvesting company.
The comments come after calls emerged for landowners neighbouring Bord na Mona bogs to be consulted as the re-wetting process begins following a massive government funding injection.
Donall Mac an Bheatha says Corlea and Knappogue bogs in Longford have already been re-wetted over the last five to seven years, with little or no issues arising.
But the Planning chief says ultimately, it may take thousands of years for our bogs to return to their original function of storing carbon and flood waters properly.
In the meantime, he says all landowners have to take responsibility for drainage themselves as well.
