A local councillor is calling on Longford County council to invest in new street cleaning equipment.
The motion was raised by Councillor Ureumu Adejinmi at the most recent meeting of Longford Municipal District.
Councillors received a demo of a compact electric street cleaner last week, with a majority citing the effectiveness of it.
Councillor Adejinmi says that litter is still a major problem in Longford Town and these cleaners will take the pressure off Tidy Towns volunteers.
'We have to not be so reliant on local volunteers because there's only so much time they can give.
Really and truly the public realm is the responsibility of Longford County Council.
This machine has lots of advantages
It's all electric , so once charged it can run for up to 8 hours, it has a water feature where it sprays on an area and disinfects while it's cleaning and y'know we can see the impact on the area.'
