Skateparks are available in Athlone, Mullingar and Cavan and it is hoped that a similar project can be progressed in Longford town.
The local authority is being called on to support the efforts of the Longford town skatepark committee who are calling for a safe space for skaters as well as people who use in line skates or BMX bikes to meet and engage in their sport.
The May meeting of Longford County Council also heard how skating can have a positive impact on people's mental health but there are also fears of anti-social or intimidation like behaviours at undesignated skating areas.
The group has established a bank account with the North Midlands Credit Union and a now urging the Council to co-operate with them to develop a free amenity in a central area of the town which may also be partially weatherproof.
It is also hoped that local skaters on the committee will be consulted on plans before construction.
The exact location of the identified site was not revealed but it is understood that the Council may consider locating any skatepark at the Mall, or at the newly purchased former greyhound stadium.
