A Longford Councillor is calling for an increase in Garda foot patrols in Longford town.
It comes following a serious stabbing incident on Main Street on Tuesday afternoon in which a man in 20's was taken to Mullingar Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Both a man and a woman remain in Garda custody in Granard and Roscommon this afternoon where they are being questioned in relation to the incident.
Councillor Seamus Butler believes there's no place in society for the extremely violent criminal activity taking place in Longford.
He says the judiciary must not repeatedly give suspended sentences in an effort to tackle the problem.
"It is up to the judiciary to put these people away. Suspended sentences should be a thing of the past. We need the resources now for the gardai to be on foot patrol every working day in Longford town and that give people a sense of security and safety."
