Longford Councillor calls for better tourism development on Lough Ree island

It's hoped that much more tourism could be developed on Lough Ree if the Council was to progress works on the little-explored island

A local councillor is calling on Longford County Council to install recreational tourist and angling infrastructure on a local authority-owned island in Lough Ree.

Councillor Mark Casey is urging the local authority to install a floating jetty, angling stands and a picnic area on Inch McDermott.

In a motion at this week's meeting of Longford County Council, the Lanesboro-based councillor said that facilities on the island could support the recently launched Lough Ree Angling 'Access For All' boat.

The boat is designed to allow easy access for wheelchair users and people with disabilities to boating and fishing trips.

Councillor Casey says the development of infrastructure on the island could be the first step in opening up Lough Ree to tourism:
