A Longford Councillor is calling for a re-structuring of local government
The issue came before the latest meeting of Longford County Council.
Councillor Gerry Warnock believes the current system of council and municipal districts don't work for larger towns such as Longford and cause frustration
He says that there needs to be a larger focus on urban centres and the re-establishment of town councils would be of more benefit:
'They have to have a standalone structure for the urban authority
But what they also need to do is be cognizant of the various needs we have in an urban authority as opposed to a rural area,
They are very, very complex needs, both societal and economic and all the problems and greatness that goes with all of that at times.
We have to have strong decision here by Government, recognise the need of provincial towns around the country and just let us grow.
We have the capacity there, we have the capability at local level, just give us the autonomy.'
