The Mayor of San Francisco in the US is to be called on to twin the city with Longford Town.
The May meeting of Longford County Council agreed that the local authority would contact Mayor London Breed and request she consider the offer due to the fact the city and country's first Irish mayor was Longford man Frank McCoppin.
Councillor Paul Ross brought the motion forward after the historic Irish politician was mentioned by American Vice President Kamala Harris during her St. Patrick's Day speech.
Frank McCoppin was born in Longford in 1834 and emigrated to the US before becoming Mayor in 1867.
Councillors agreed to make the offer, with Paul Ross telling members that the Irish man has not been forgotten by the city over the last 150 years.
Speaking to Shannonside FM News after the meeting, the Fine Gael Councillor says San Franciso's success could bring advantages to Longford.
''He was mayor in 1867 he was born in Longford on the 4th of July 1834 and it's worth exploring these links with San Francisco, which is one of the superpowers of the world, one of the highest GDPs in the world. There's actually a number of parks named after him, he's well remembered, there's a McCoppin Square in the Parkside District of San Francisco and there's a McCoppin Street in the Mission District and there's a school named The Frank McCoppin Elementary School so he's well remembered for man who's passed over 150 years at this stage.''
