A Longford Councillor has called for harsher penalties to be imposed on people who allow their dogs foul the streets.
Councillor Peggy Nolan likened the street of Longford town to Calcutta at a recent meeting of the Longford M.D after seeing litter, dog poo and experiencing a foul smell on the main street
The meeting was told that the number of people fined for dog fouling is very low, and there was a call for more signage to be erected as well as stiffer penalties for those caught not picking up after their pets.
The Fine Gael representative claimed that people need to become more pro-active in reporting dog fouling and if she saw someone littering she would happily call it out :
