A Longford councillor says Ireland needs to take inspiration from the US and put a plan in place to ensure greater diversity in the Oireachtas and in positions of authority.
Nigerian born Uruemu Adejinmi has been a member of Longford County Council for the last year and says with 10% of the population made up of different nations in the last census, it's clear the Oireachtas doesn't represent modern Ireland.
The Fianna Fail councillor says that from her experience in local politics over the past year she feels it can really help to have someone from a minority group involved.
She says the events of the past few days in the United States has highlighted to her how important diversity is in a country, and how positive it can be when it's celebrated.
Councillor Adejinmi says while we still have a long way to go with female representation, the gender quotas have helped, and a similar plan is needed to encourage diversity in the Oireachtas:
