A Longford Councillor believes the delay in publishing the preferred route for the N4 Mullingar-Longford dual carriageway is ludicrous.
Seamus Butler says it seems an arm of Government doesn't want the project to progress and he's now calling on Transport Infrastructure Ireland to address concerns.
While he acknowledges there has been a change in regulation since consultants began the route selection process he believes the length of time it's taken is extraordinary.
The Fianna Fail representative says the road will be of huge economic benefit to the region and lands frozen until the route is selected must be released as early as possible.
"I suspect there may be a Green agenda that they don't want any more motorways, but we're going to be driving electric cars and hybrids and trucks are still going to have to move around the country. If we want investment into Longford and the northwest where hundreds of thousands of people work, we need this vital piece of infrastructure.
