The proof of the Longford Community Safety Partnership will be to see if they can get extra Garda resources.
That's according to Longford Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Butler who is Vice-Chair of the pilot programme.
Longford is one of three pilot areas around the country where the partnerships have bene set up to replace the Joint Policing Committees.
Reacting to the latest violence in Longford town Councillor Butler said the former JPC had managed to get some extra help in recent years.
He says the effectiveness of the new pilot will be measured by its ability to get more Gardaí assigned to the division.
''The local community safety partnership has to play a role in getting the resources that there are guards on the street on foot patrol in Longford every working day of the week, not just for a few days here and a few days there, those resources need to be put in and the effectiveness of the new pilot, as you say, local safety partnership is going to be a mark if we get those resources.''
