A Longford Councillor is raising concerns over the shortage of home care support workers across the county.
The issue was raised at a meeting of the Mid-Leinster Regional Health Forum which heard that there is a lack of staff in both HSE and privately run services.
This is resulting in a delay in the discharging of patients from hospitals which Councillor PJ Reilly believes is wrong, and says people would prefer to live independently at home with some care support.
The HSE revealed that a number of staff remain on Covid-19 leave and while recruitment is ongoing, families are being asked to assist with covering calls.
Councillor Reilly who is also chair of the forum hopes the HSE will recruit more home helps to ease the pressure put on families.
