A Longford councillor has stressed the need for refuge centres for victims of domestic violence in the county.
Councillor Uruemu Adejinmi says it is important to 'tackle the scourge of domestic violence head on.'
It comes as Justice Minister Helen McEntee admitted the level of domestic abuse has tripled in the last 10 years to over 46 thousand cases.
128 Gardaí are called out to domestic violence incidents every day, with the majority of abuse being carried out against women.
There are nine counties throughout the country without a refuge centre for families of domestic abuse, including counties Longford, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, and Monaghan.
Government agency Cuan however confirmed earlier this year that eight refuge units for domestic violence will be established in Longford by the end of next year.
Speaking to Shannonside News, Councillor Uruemu Adejinmi emphasised the need for more refuge centres in the region:
