Longford County Council's regeneration team is to examine a proposal to develop a research and innovation institute at Connolly Barracks.
Six Fianna Fail councillors made the proposal at this month's meeting of the local authority to seek funding to locate a centre of excellence for arts, humanities, social sciences and STEM subjects at the army barracks that closed in 2009.
The motion received support form elected members, and it's hoped that EU and national government funding could be provided to examine the feasibility of the project.
Councillor Remu Adejinmi is hopeful that proposing an institute to foster creativity as well as certain skill sets would be a major boost to Longford.
