Longford County Council paid out almost €1.1 million in insurance claims in the space of 15 months. Nearly €878,000 was settled last year year and over €209,000 between this January and March. Last year's figure was a big increase on 2022, when claims valued at nearly €448,000 were settled.
The money is paid by the council's insurers for issues like trips and slips on footpaths. Fine Gael councillor Paul Ross has been reacting to the new figures:
