Longford County Council is to establish a county wide register of defibrillators.
The initiative was agreed by local councillors with the local authority now inviting businesses and community groups to join the project.
Automated external defibrillators are located in communities, sports clubs and businesses across the region and are a vital step in helping someone during a cardiac incident.
Community, sporting, and voluntary groups are now urged to gather the details of local defibs and register them on an online form on the council website by July 12th.
Longford County Council Civil Defence Officer, Emma Reid says people should not wait for an emergency to learn where the nearest defibrillators is.
Speaking to Shannonside FM, she says the AEDs are saving lives around the country:
'They come in all shapes, sizes, models and colours but they all have the same functions.
An on button, somewhere to put the pads, and the shock delivery button.
So when you calm yourself down, plug it in and it tells you what to do. You literally cannot go wrong.
Everybody can be trained in it but everyone can also use one. It absolutely talks you through it.
It even has pictures on the pads to show you the correct placement, the works, its fool proof.'
