Longford County Council is to impose a weight limit on a section of road being used by trucks taking peat from boglands in the south of the county.
The September meeting of Ballymahon M.D heard concerns that up to ten trucks a day were travelling taking tonnes of peat to locations across a local road which was suffering significant damage as a result.
Councillor Mick Cahill appealed to the Council to intervene on behalf of local residents as well as also raising an issue of road safety for the residents in the Cloonfower area.
He says the traffic is causing a lot of concern for locals: "Local county roads find it more challenging and particularly when you are going through bog areas and narrow roads. It does cause quite a lot of damge on the side of roads, especially if trucks meet ongoing traffic and it's wider than the road so traffic has to give way. That's a challenge and the lorries have a weight limit so they can't overload anyway but the constant nature of it is causing a problem."
