The council will now take responsibility for the provision of the vital life saving equipment

Longford County Council has committed to replacing and monitoring water safety equipment at a popular town waterway.

The Royal Canal in Longford stretches from the town and passes through a large part of the county, with hundreds using the walkways everyday.

A member of the public contacted Shannonside FM news in recent days and highlighted the fact that several life buoys are missing along the route, with the equipment housing damaged from vandalism in some cases.

Queries to both Longford County Council and Waterways Ireland, saw each organisation deny responsibility for the provision and replacement of the buoys.

Following an intervention by Local Councillor Kevin Hussey and the Local Authority Civil Defence officer Emma Reid, the Council has now agreed to take over the responsibility.

A number of the missing ring buoys will be replaced in the coming days, with a full safety review of the canal spur due in the coming months.
