Longford Environmental Officer Gary Brady is warmly welcoming new legislation on CCTV usage this week.
The new laws in the Circular Economy were approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday and published and debated in the Dail on Wednesday
The use of security cameras to deter illegal dumping had been curtailed in recent years because of GDPR privacy laws.
However, the government says the circular economy bill provides for the GDPR-compliant use of a range of technologies, including CCTV, for waste enforcement purposes while 'protecting the privacy rights of citizens'.
Gary Brady says CCTV is a very useful tool for the council in prosecuting and deterring dumping activities.
