The Longford GP at the centre of a massive vaccine over delivery has called on the HSE to take responsibility for the error.
Dr. Syed Ali, who runs a surgery at Leader House in the Town, received 240 vials of the Pfizer vaccine on Thursday following a reported order of just 40 vials.
One container of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine contains six doses, meaning the local GP received almost 1,500 individual vaccines, with a total storage life of just 72 hours.
According to Dr Ali, it was only thanks to a massive effort from his staff and other GP surgeries, that the vaccines were used before they expired on Monday morning.
The incident saw 100s of people queue in the town over the weekend in order to receive a dose, with estimates putting close to 40 per cent of the population in Longford having now received their first dose of a vaccine.
In a statement to Shannonside news, the HSE claim the practice made a late change to the vaccine order, but that the vaccines had already been taken from cold storage and readied for transport.
This was denied by the Longford Doctor, who has invited HSE to examine his records.
