A group of people from Longford will join in a walk to Knock shrine in Mayo today as part of a nationwide fundraising event.
The Longford contingent will join a group of people from Dublin who are heading to Mayo this weekend to raise funds for Mary's Meals , a charity that was set up in 2002 to give children a hot meal at a place of education.
The premise behind the charity is that education is one of the main weapons in overcoming poverty and it has now spread to 19 countries across the world where volunteer parents prepare a basic meal for children who can manage to turn up to the schools.
Longford businessman Louis Herterich who's become heavily involved in the local branch of the charity over the last year says they'll be setting off with the Dublin group from St Mel's Cathedral this morning, and hope to raise much needed funds for the cause.
