A Longford resident is accusing big insurance companies of treating sick people in our country as outcasts and second-class citizens.
Padraig Kelly who lives in Legan says he and his partner want to go to visit the United States, but they can't get travel insurance because his partner will need dialysis treatment over there.
He says even though the couple has sourced a dialysis centre close to where they want to stay in US, and will pay privately for those treatments, the insurance companies won't give travel cover.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning the Legan resident says he feels the insurance companies are victimising people who have any kind of serious illness:
"We're paying for the dialysis when we go out there. So it's between $350 and $500 per session. There'd be no claim on that with the insurance. It's just a backup to have. You can go and get travel insurance and get an add on for snowmobile insurance. In my opinion there's more risk involved with that than going into a dialysis".
