A Longford man who met Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Ireland says it's a moment he won't forget.
Martin Skelly and his wife Gaye were invited to an event in Croke Park during the Queen's historic visit to the country in 2011.
The former chairperson of the Leinster Council believes the visit put the past behind both countries and strengthened its relationship.
The Newtowncashel couple had a brief conversation with the monarch and they say the Queen was interested in meeting and chatting to those present.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show Martin recalled the special moment.
''She asked me where I was from and I told her that I was from Longford and I described where Longford was. She gave us the impression anyway that she was definitely interested and the eye contact was very clear, the handshake was warm and she didn't rush she looked as if she was definitely interested. It was a moment in life that one wouldn't forget.''
