A Longford man has been jailed for 52 months after being convicted of causing serious injury to his second cousin following a violent incident at Longford shopping centre in December 2018.
Following a week-long trial in February, Denis Hannifin, of Curry, Athlone Road, was convicted of assault, affray and possession and production of a knife at Longford Shopping centre on December 7th 2018.
In his victim impact statement, Denis McGinley, who the court heard was the best man at the wedding of Mr Hannifin's daughter outlined that ever since the incident his life has not been the same and he "genuinely" thought he was going to die.
He claimed his confidence was shattered and he was very conscious of a scar on his face and weakness in his side and arm following the incident.
Judge Francis Comer ford imposed a 52 month sentence for the section four assault causing serious harm - suspending the final eight months for a period of eight months after the 42-year-old is released from jail.
Concurrent sentences of 30 months were imposed for the possession and use of a knife and a 25 month sentence was imposed for a charge of affray.

The sentence was backdated to February 25th when the construction worrker went into custody.
