Officials in Longford County Council are being asked to prepare options for a county museum.
Councillor Paul Ross says his proposal at Wednesday's meeting of the local authority is prompted by the recent discovery of an ancient hauberk in the Edgeworthstown area.
The coat of chain mail which is thought to be over 800 years old is now at the National Museum for verification, and will have to remain there if there is not dedicated county museum locally.
Fine Gael's Peggy Nolan has also highlighted that archives for Longford are in storage in Leitrim at a cost of over 35,000 euro each year.
Councillor Ross told Let's Talk that it makes sense to make better use of that money.
