The campaign has now passed the €40,000 mark with a final target of €100,000 for the new playing surface.

A Longford school raising funds for a new pitch trough the deposit return scheme has passed a major fundraising milestone.

The 'Pitch in' for Melview National School campaign is seeking to create a safer, more accessible all-weather astro play space at the school outside of Longford Town.

Parents, families and local businesses are continuing to drop off large amounts of bottles, cans and cartons to the school and other designated drop off spots around the county.

Those items are then returned by volunteers to the Re-Turn scheme locations with the recouped funds lodged in the school's Go Fund Me appeal.

The campaign has now passed the €40,000 mark with a final target of €100,000 for the new playing surface.
