A Longford Senator is defending his call to have the word 'disorder' taken out of everyday language when we're talking about autism.
Fine Gael's Micheal Carrigy faced an online backlash on twitter in the last fortnight when he spoke in the Seanad saying that autism is not a disorder, but just a different personality.
A number of people took to twitter to disagree, and accused the Longford politician of trying to 'minimise' the condition.
Senator Carrigy says he realises the medical definition is called Autism Spectrum Disorder, but he feels many people don't think of the word in that way when they hear it used.
He says he particularly wants to have the term taken out of language that is used to refer to special education measures, such as 'ASD units' in schools.
