Longford Senator Micheál Carrigy is calling for parade organisers around the country to once again consider 'quiet' sections for the events next month.
The Fine Gael Senator, who's also Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism says that as the father of a young boy with autism, he's well aware of how the parades can often be inhospitable places because of the noise, lights, and crowds of people.
Last year the organisers of the St Patrick's Day Parade in Longford Town agreed that a section of the event would have no music or sirens so that families with autistic members would be able to watch in a comfortable and safe area.
Senator Carrigy says he now wants all parade organisers countrywide to take the idea on board and to make it possible for all families to be able to enjoy the national festivities.
"I have to say, compliments to the organisers of the parade and the local chamber of commerce who took that initiative and introduced a space in the town which left it that families with kids, particularly with Autism that find it difficult with loud noises. would have a safe space to attend the parade. I would like to see that extended across the country, that all parades would take it onboard for 2023".
