A Longford senator is calling on the Department of Education to make a commitment to the building of a new secondary school for Meán Scoil Mhuire in the town.
Speaking in the Seanad today, Fine Gael's Micheál Carrigy said the school is currently renting an adjacent building in order to meet enrolment demands.
He said Longford County Council have identified a site that they are willing to sell to the Department of Education for the construction of a new school.
However, in reply to Senator Carrigy, Minister Frank Feighan on behalf of the Minister for Education gave no commitment to providing a new school but said the department would work closely with its trustees.
Senator Carrigy is now asking the department to meet with Longford County Council, local TD's and the school principal to progress the matter.
