A major supermarket in Longford has been given permission to demolish their current outlet to develop a brand new store
Lidl GMBH had applied to Longford County Council to develop a new supermarket at an extended site on the Dublin road in the town.
The German retailer applied to the Council in June for permission to knock their current store in the town and to replace it with a much larger building, comprising of a supermarket and off licence. The plans also include works at former fuel depot site adjacent to the current supermarket on the R393.
According to the plans submitted to the council, the retailer hopes to build a part single part two storey building with the retail space covering an area of over 1600 square metres. The current entrance on the Dublin Road is also set to be revised as well as the car park at the store and electric vehicle charging points are also included in the plans.
Further information was requested from the company in August and received last month- with concerns raised by planners including the 'chaotic' traffic situation at the store at times. Longford County Council has granted planning subject to 16 conditions and no submission on the project from the general public were received.
