Based on a survey at 15 forecourts nationwide, many are selling petrol for around 1.80 a litre and diesel for less than 2 euro.

Smaller petrol retailers could well be forced out of business during the current fuel price crisis.

That's according to Fianna Fail Deputy Joe Flaherty who says smaller retailers have given his evidence of major price hikes from the bigger suppliers in the five days before the excise reduction.

The Longford/Westmeath TD says he's been contacted by two forecourt owners who lost between €5,000 and €6,000 each last week because they have to prepay for their supplies.

He says he believes the big groups are exploiting the Ukraine war and using it to put pressure on smaller fuel retailers.
