Traffic disruption in Longford town is set to continue towards the end of the year as the Battery Road works continue.
The €2.6 million project is one of four pathfinder projects in the town that are part of Active Travel measures.
The works began late last year with the expansion of footpaths and the creation of 1.3 kilometres of cycle lanes, with the majority of works originally targeted to be complete this summer.
Similar works were undertaken and recently completed on the Ballinalee road and Major's Well Road on the other side of town.
The ongoing works on the Battery Road have been the subject of many complaints by both locals and motorists over traffic issues and delays.
In an update given to today's Longford Municipal District meeting, it was confirmed that initial ground works found there to be no foundation under the old road.
According to local authority engineers, this has added significant time to the project as a full road reconstruction must now be completed.
Councillors were told that the temporary traffic lights in place on the route are being adjusted daily to take account of traffic patterns.
According to the council, traffic levels on the road have fallen from 12,000 vehicles a day to 6,000, with motorists continually urged to take alternative routes.
Councillors have called for better communication with residents in the Abbeycartron, Demesne and Tennis Court Lane areas, with Councillor Seamus Butler stating that locals feel abandoned.
Phase 3 of the works will be complete early next month, with phase 4 beginning directly afterwards.
