Longford Westmeath TD Peter Burke says he believes directly elected Mayors will be the chosen future for several counties across the country.
The Fine Gael Deputy, and Minister of State for Local Government, is seeking Government approval for the drafting of legislation that will allow for such an election to take place in Limerick later this year.
The planned legislation comes after the successful May 2019 plebiscite in Limerick that saw people vote in favour of creating the office there.
