Longford woman Sarah McNally died after she was allegedly stabbed in the neck by a person known to her, US police suspect.
They are investigating if she was the victim of a “targeted attack”.
The 41-year-old died in Queens in New York on Saturday evening.
Laura Colgan, interim editor for the Irish Star, who is based on New York, told Shannonside FM: “Sarah was originally from Longford town and has been living in New York for about 10 years now.
“She is well established in the Irish community here. She was living in Flushing in Queens and worked in an Irish bar called the Ceili House (on Grand Avenue in Maspeth) in Queens, where this incident sadly happened.”
Police received an emergency call shortly after 6.30pm on Saturday.
Ms Colgan added: “They arrived where they found Ms McNally with a stab wound to her neck and a man with wounds to his neck and his back.
“An ambulance arrived shortly after and brought them both to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.
“Ms McNally was sadly pronounced dead shortly after arriving in the hospital and a man remains there in hospital in a critical condition.”
The New York Police Department is investigating the case.
Ms Colgan added: “No arrests have yet been made, but they believe this was a targeted attack.
“They believe Ms McNally knew her attacker and they are following a particular line of inquiry.”
