The issue relates back to September of 2019 when gardai seized the weapon under section 27A1 of the firearms act at Farneyhoogan

Two Longford women have pleaded guilty to possession of a double barrel sawn off shotgun and ammunition outside of Longford Town in 2019.

On the 2nd of September 2019, Gardaí seized the weapon under section 27A1 of the firearms act at Farneyhoogan near the town.

Caroline Donoghue of Cluain Na Sibhe, Killashee and 22 year old Pauline Dempsey of Farnagh, Longford appeared before Longford Circuit Criminal Court this week in relation to the charge.

Section 27A1 of the firearms act states that it is an offence for a person to possess a firearm in circumstances that give rise to reasonable inference that they do not possess it for a lawful purpose.

Appearing before Judge Keenan Johnson at Longford Court House yesterday, both women pleaded guilty to the offence and the possession of the sawn off shotgun, along with four 12 gauge shotgun shells.

The women were remanded on bail to appear before the court on the 5th of October for sentencing.

Counsel for Pauline Dempsey requested, and was granted, an adjustment to bail conditions to allow her to sign on in Kells Garda Station in Meath instead of Longford as she would be relocating there presently.
