Longford's French twin town nods to their Celtic links with new statue

The red hair on the statue of "Marianne" is thought to symbolise the town's Irish links.

A town in France which has strong links to Longford is being praised for including a nod to their Celtic links in a new stature in the town.

Noyal Chatillon and Longford have been twinned for over twenty years and a new statue was unveiled in the town recently, to represent the French national symbol of "Marianne".

However, the red hair of the statue, designed by artist Laurent Le Meut is thought to symbolise the town's strong Irish links.

Longford Councillor Seamus Butler says it's a lovely tribute to long standing ties between the two areas:
