Longford's Joe Flaherty and Castlerea councillor Gareth Scahill will be senators for the next five years.
They have secured two of the Taoiseach's nominations for the Upper House.
Flaherty lost his seat in the Dáil in the general election in the Longford-Westmeath constituency in November.
The Fianna Fáil man also contested the Seanad elections last month, but narrowly lost out.
But Taoiseach Micheál Martin has today selected him as one of his 11 nominees.
Castlerea councillor Scahill, from Fine Gael, has also been selected.
He secured a seat on Roscommon County Council for the first time last June.
His party colleague on the council, Liam Callaghan, has been reacting to the news:
There is no joy for outgoing senator Aisling Dolan, whose political career is now in jeopardy.
