A joint Oireachtas Committee has heard of the human cost of the flooding in the lands surrounding Lough Funshinagh in Roscommon
The Joint Committee on Agriculture, food and the marine met in Leinster house yesterday evening with local politicians, community representatives and landowners present.
The meeting itself was organised by Senator Eugene Murphy with the assistance of Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice. Attendees included members of the Lough Funshinagh resident's group, local councillor Laurence Fallon and Roscommon based Senator Aisling Dolan. Speaking at the opening of the meeting, local farmer Tommy Carney gave his own account of the damage caused by flooding to his farm in Ballagh.
He described a substantial loss in acreage resulting in him being forced to reduce both his cattle and sheep herd which has been a direct blow to his livelihood.
Addressing both TDs and Senators, the local farmer spoke of dangers facing the communities surrounding Lough Funshinagh.
