MEP Colm Markey says peat could not be a long-term solution.

National energy concerns following the Russian invasion of Ukraine are unlikely to result in the reactivation of Lanesboro Power Station.

That's according to Midlands North West MEP Colm Markey following the release of a new report on EU plans to move away from Russian energy supplies.

The Fine Gael representative believes that despite fears of fuel shortages, fossil fuel power plants such as the Lough Ree power station in Lanesboro will remain closed.

However, MEP Markey believes bans on the harvesting of peat for horticulture and some short term uses should be overturned due to the current crisis.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound at the EU Parliament in Strasbourg this week, he says Ireland must move towards expanding our renewable resources.
