A local lifeboat crew and sub-aqua crew carried out a major rescue yesterday.
The Lough Ree RNLI, based at Coosan Point, and the Athlone Sub Aqua club were dispatched to rescue 3 boats in distress on Lough Ree just after 7pm on Monday.
Upon reaching the location of the incident, it was discovered two 52ft cruisers and one 32ft cruiser had run aground on a shoal north of the Black Islands.
The crews assessed all 26 people onboard and no injuries were reported.
All 3 vessels were safely re-floated and were able to carry on under their own power.
The RNLI are reminding everyone planning a trip onto the lake to wear lifejackets and always carry sufficient fuel for the journey
