The Lough Ree RNLI reached a big milestone this week as they met their community funding target of €1.2m.
The Lough Ree RNLI Appeal Fund group presented a cheque for €100,000 to the head of the RNLI on Monday.
The funding covers the cost of the new lifeboat station on the lake which is manned by a team of 46 volunteers.
Press Officer for the Lough Ree RNLI, Tom McGuire, says the fundraising wouldn't have been possible without the support of the community.
"There were a number of people who took on a number of endurance tasks, like swimming from the bridge at Lanesboro to the bridge in Athlone, doing 2 marathons around Lough Ree, and enduring the cold for an extended period of time, just to raise funds. There was lot of imagination, there was lots of fun, and there was a good result at the end".
