10 acres of land near the rail line at Carrick-on-Shannon is set to become the first area in Ireland to be planted with native woodland under a new scheme announced by the government.
This week the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine launched the "Creation of Native Woodland on Public Land" scheme in association with Iarnród Éireann who are to develop 10 acres of land situated beside the Dublin to Sligo Line approximately 2km southwest of Carrick on Shannon town between the line and Lough Corry.
The site will be planted with native species such as alder, grey willow and ash as well as other flowering plants.
It's hoped that planning processes will allow the site to be prepared for planting later this year or in early 2021.
