The majority of incidents happened during the day, with just 18 logged as having occurred at night time in an unlit area.

15 incidents on the stretch between Athlone and Ballinasloe were categorised as high priority involving accidents, vehicles on fire, or obstructions.

Two motorists were caught speeding on the M6 Glen Athlone in Westmeath, one travelling at 131km/h and another at 144km/h in a 120km/h zone. 

The collision led to the road being closed and diversions being put in place

Investigations are ongoing.

This is to facilitate the recovery of a truck that crashed overnight.

A crash last month caused damage to the road surface which requires repair.

Members of the same family are understood to have died in one vehicle.
