A local TD believes the government must remove barriers that prohibit elderly people from renting their homes while they are receiving long-term nursing home care.
Denis Naughten has been making these comments as the government prepares to face off against opposition parties this evening over the reversal of the eviction ban.
There will be a Sinn Féin motion debated in the Dáil later today and voted upon tomorrow calling for the ban to be reinstated.
Roscommon-Galway TD says the Regional Group of Independents have put forward eight proposals to tackle the housing crisis.
He says the Independent TDs will decide on how to vote depending on how the government responds to these proposals.
He believes changes to the Croí Cónaithe refurbishment scheme will benefit the Shannonside region.
''Three of these proposals we've put forward are in relation to the Croi Conaithe Scheme, this is the refurbishment of vacant houses across the country and we feel in our part of the country this would release a huge amount of housing, take for example County Roscommon today there are 4000 vacant houses but there are only 12 for rent.''
