The land was acquired by the Hodson Bay Group last year

The owners of the Hodson Bay resort outside Athlone plan to develop a major eco-tourism facility on a 145 acre peninsula adjoining the site.

According to todays Irish Times , the Yewpoint area is already a specially protected conservation site and was owned by members of the Lenihan family before it was bought by the Hodson Bay group last year.

A series of walking trails have already been developed on the land and there are plans to build a number of eco-cabins in the area as well.

Cars will be banned from the area and it's also reported that a new marina is being considered, as well as a floating boardwalk similar to the one at Acres Lake in Drumshanbo.

The Hodson Bay Group already owns the hotel on the shores of Lough Ree as well as the Sheraton in Athlone, the Hyatt in Dublin, and the Galway Bay Hotel.
