A number of long-awaited healthcare projects in the Shannonside region are to benefit from a 1.2 billion funding announcement from the government. The plan includes a major rebuild at St Joseph's Care Centre in Longford Town as well as a confirmation of a long awaited second hospice bed for the county. The works will see bed capacity at the care centre increase to 68 bed spaces with works expected to begin later in Summer.
In Roscommon, the funding will help progress a new 50-bed replacement unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital. It will also help to further progress a 90-bed community nursing unit on the Leitrim Road in Carrick-on-Shannon. An adult respite centre for people will disabilities will also progress as a result of this funding.
The four-bed unit will be developed beside St Patricks Community Hospital in Carrick. Fianna Fail Longford/Westmeath TD Joe Flaherty says the people of Longford have been crying out for these works for years:
