Plans are due to be lodged shortly for a significant addition to the Longford Athletics centre project currently under construction at St. Mel's College in the town.
The future centre of excellence will include top-level training infrastructure for multiple different disciplines under the athletics umbrella, long jump, hurdles and high-intensity training.
Following recent consultation with the Diocesan Trust, who own the property, plans are now being developed to add a 400-metre outdoor running track around the pitch adjoining the centre.
Speaking at a visit to the project yesterday, Minister for Sports Jack Chambers, says local collaboration on the project has ensured the creation of a vital facility for up and coming athletes.
