A significant urban regeneration project for Roscommon Town has taken a major step forward.
Roscommon County Council has applied for Part 8 planning permission for the 'Putting the Spokes Back In The Wheel Project''.
The plans would see new park and cycle ways along the Circular Road from the Lanesboro Street Roundabout to the Athlone Road Roundabout.
Included in the works is the creation of several controlled and uncontrolled crossings on the busy route as well as the demolition of the existing Library building and the redevelopment of the parking area next to the Roscommon Arts centre.
Public realm improvement works are also part of the plans on Church Street, Goff Street, the N61 and N63, as well as on Main Street.
Part 8 planning applications are plans submitted by the council itself, and require the seal of approval from Councillors.
The project was allocated 9.2 million euro in funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund in 2021.
