The significant over-supply of the vaccine last week and an increase in operations at the county's mass vaccination centre has seen numbers jump over the last 7 days.

A Longford GP estimates that between 30 and 40 per cent of people in Longford have now received their first Covid 19 vaccine.

Up to 1500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine were delivered in error to Dr Sayed Ali's general practice on Thursday instead of between 300 and 400 hundred.

Nurses and staff were joined by staff from other practices in the town, county and from Athlone to work overtime throughout the weekend to use up the vials before they expired.

While every effort was made to prioritise vulnerable people in cohorts 4 and 7, many other people received a vaccine ahead of their time.

Dr Paul Truick says that while it was unfortunate that the error happened, the work of all those involved has meant says the population of the county is much safer than it was three or four weeks ago.
