A senior Uisce Eireann official has promised the Athlone public that they will be kept in the loop through the Athlone Main Drainage Project works.
114 million euro has been allocated to upgrade the town's water infrastructure in one of their largest funding plans to date.
The existing pumping stations and pipework will be decommissioned and combined sewer overflows will be eliminated at six locations along the River Shannon
These will be replaced by two new stormwater overflows designed to meet current licensing standards, which Irish Water say will improve water quality and safeguard the environment.
Works will take place at a number of locations across Athlone including Golden Island, West Bank , West Side, Abbey Road, Coosan West, The Strand, Burgess Park, Payne's Lane, and two separate tunneled crossings under the River Shannon.
Regional Infrastructure Delivery Lead for Uisce Eunan Canavan says that a combination of new tunneling technology and close consultation with the public will mean less imposition on residents.
